With Gov. Maura Healey's signature, Massachusetts recently joined seven other states in making universal school lunches available to all students, no matter their family's income level. The new program means no student can be denied from receiving a free breakfast and lunch, even if that student's family did not fill out an application for low- or no-cost school meals. Previously, students had to qualify for free meals through their family's income. Leran Minc, assistant director of state policy at Project Bread, explained that the previous system helped families of modest means in a high cost-of-living state.
