FRAMINGHAM — Rising housing costs and a need for more versatile housing have the city taking a close look at permitting accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in what would be a significant alteration to Framingham's housing code. ADUs are defined as apartments or small buildings that are official residences on the property of established residences. Historically, ADUs are referred to as in-law apartments, a name that comes from their frequent use to house older residents who move in with their children or other family members.
